Así como la medicina avanza a pasos agigantados también la
tecnología para mascotas está innovando en todo lo relacionado con la
salud y el cuidado de nuestros fieles compañeros.
Su historia comenzó hace 12 años y fue como de película, cuenta Roxana
Urrieta, una capitalina de 25 años de edad: “estaba deprimida, había
entrado a la secundaria y mis papás comenzaron su proceso de divorcio,
me sentía muy sola”, hasta que en un mercado cercano a su domicilio
tropezó con una vendedora que tenía cinco perritos en una caja de cartón
y descubrió a un cachorrito café rojizo con manchas blancas que
intentaba escapar, curiosamente ella escuchaba Maybe de Janis
Joplin, su cantante favorita. Allí nació su amor a primera vista por
Jopi, contracción del apellido de su intérprete preferida.
Desde ese día se hicieron inseparables, el perrito estuvo a su lado
en sus momentos más trascendentes: el divorcio de sus padres, su primera
ruptura amorosa, su primera materia reprobada, la pérdida de su
virginidad y las primeras vacaciones que pasó con sus amigos.
Todo era miel sobre hojuelas, pero como nada es para siempre, la edad
y la falta de reflejos, provocaron que Jopi no pudiera evitar que un
auto lo atropellara, destrozándole dos patas. El conductor se dio a la
fuga y aunque la atención fue inmediata, el veterinario no pudo evitar
la amputación.
“Pensé lo peor, lo primero que se me vino a la cabeza era que habría
que sacrificarlo”, rememora Roxana, sin embargo, gracias a la oportuna
intervención quirúrgica, el perro salvó la vida, pese a ello el
especialista advirtió que sí podría vivir sin patas pero que no volvería
a caminar.
El mismo veterinario le dio una luz de esperanza: en Estados Unidos
estaban desarrollando prótesis para perros. De inmediato, Roxana se puso
en contacto con una clínica en Texas: 400 dólares y dos semanas después
llegaron las nuevas patas del can.
El desenlace de la historia tuvo un final feliz y Jopi, pese a su
edad, todavía se desplaza con soltura. Su dueña cambió las antiguas
prótesis por unas de impresión 3D que le amoldan a la perfección: “no
corre tan rápido como antes pero es por la edad, tengo claro que ya es
un perro viejo, pero mientras yo pueda hacer algo para ayudarlo lo
mantendré a mi lado”, suscribe Roxana.
Más que humanos
Este tipo de historias se replican alrededor del globo debido a la
gran cantidad de personas que comparte su vida con mascotas, tan sólo en
Estados Unidos se estima que más del 62% de las personas posee al menos
un animal de compañía. Por esta razón la tecnología en este sector se
ha desarrollado a pasos agigantados, uno ni se imagina la cantidad de
productos que existen en el mercado. Esta industria floreciente promete
facilitar no sólo la vida de los animales, sino de sus dueños.
La diversificación va más allá del sector salud, también se cuentan
con elementos de entretenimiento, monitoreo, alimentación a distancia y
hasta accesorios y dispositivos de limpieza. Ni qué decir de lo valioso
que resulta la tecnología en el campo de la medicina y geriatría
veterinaria donde en la última década se han conseguido grandes logros:
neuroprótesis cerebroespinales (permiten recuperar la movilidad en patas
traseras), sillas de ruedas para perros y gatos, prótesis impresas en
3D, marcapasos caninos, implantes oculares para recuperar la visión,
entre otros.
Un arma de dos filos
El uso de esta tecnología permite a los animales de compañía
mantenerse saludables por más tiempo y ser felices gracias a la amplia
variedad de dispositivos que permiten estar conectados a sus dueños.
Si bien el mercado de las mascotas ha crecido en los últimos años,
también la tendencia a dejarlos solos en el hogar. Al respecto,
especialistas en todo el mundo como Pamela Wyman, gerente de la escuela
de entrenamiento de mascotas DogEvolve en Oakland, California, han
declarado que: “La tecnología puede ser útil como accesorio, una manera
de enriquecer la relación con la mascota, pero no sustituye el tiempo
que uno debe dedicarle a su perro”.
En México las cifras no son claras, pero en Estados Unidos, por
ejemplo, cerca de 80 millones de hogares tienen mascotas registradas, lo
que se tradujo en 2015 en una derrama económica por parte de sus dueños
de más de 60,000 millones de dólares, según cifras de la Asociación
Estadounidense de Productos para Mascotas.
Pero a medida que aparecen nuevos artefactos en el mercado, los
expertos advierten que el exceso de confianza en ellas puede ser
perjudicial, pues la gente comienza a darle mayor responsabilidad a los
auxiliares tecnológicos, que pese a “diseñarse con la más alta calidad y
con la mejor de las intenciones, pueden presentar fallas que dañen a
las mascotas”, dice Wyman.

"I thought the worst, the first thing that came to mind was that it would have to be sacrificed," recalls Roxana, however, thanks to the timely surgical intervention, the dog saved his life, despite this the specialist warned that he could live no legs but would never walk again.
The same vet gave him a glimmer of hope: in the United States they were developing prosthetics for dogs. Immediately, Roxana contacted a clinic in Texas: 400 dollars and two weeks later the new legs of the dog arrived.
The denouement of the story had a happy ending and Jopi, despite his age, still moves with ease. His owner changed the old prostheses for 3D printing ones that fit him perfectly: “He doesn't run as fast as before but it's because of his age, I am clear that he is an old dog, but as long as I can do something to help him I will keep him by my side, ”Roxana subscribes.
More than humans
These types of stories are replicated around the globe due to the large number of people who share their lives with pets, in the United States alone it is estimated that more than 62% of people own at least one pet. The use of this technology allows pets to stay healthy for longer and be happy thanks to the wide variety of devices that allow them to be connected to their owners.
While the market for pets has grown in recent years, so has the tendency to leave them alone at home. In this regard, specialists around the world such as Pamela Wyman, manager of the DogEvolve pet training school in Oakland, California, have stated that: “Technology can be useful as an accessory, a way to enrich the relationship with the pet, but it is not a substitute for the time that one should dedicate to their dog ”.
